Who We Are

Morgan Duke Conservation Society helps maintain and preserve the natural resources and the environment in the Adirondack Preserves, Catskill Preserves, and other places in New York State.  We want the current and future generations to enjoy the natural resources and the environment while they are camping, visiting, and hiking – no visitor should have to hike or camp in a place where there is garbage all over the place.

Morgan Duke Conservation Society and its volunteers pick up litter at areas in the Adirondack Preserves, Catskill Preserves, and other places in New York State. At the same time, we educate the public about the importance of carrying their belongings out with them after they camp, hike, or otherwise visit an area. We do our best to educate the public that littering is extremely harmful to the environment.

Morgan Duke Conservation Society helps protect local wildlife, including threatened and endangered species and their habitats. In the past, many people have driven four-wheel vehicles up and down the steep embankments where it is not allowed; this causes the destruction of vegetation such as small trees and other local plants. We help restore this vegetation by planting trees in coordination with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s (NYSDEC’s) efforts to add logs and rocks to block off the embankment where driving is not permitted. We also educate the public about the importance of not driving over vegetation because of the substantial damage it causes to wildlife including threatened and endangered wildlife species. What’s more, wildlife relies on this vegetation as a food source, habitat, protection from other animals, and much more.

Morgan Duke Conservation Society also helps with preparing parks and other areas for the peak recreation season by painting outhouses, picnic tables, and trail gates. We also educate people that writing on picnic tables and outhouses is not good for the natural environment and that visitors who see people writing bad words in the park are not able to peacefully enjoy the natural setting.

As part of its conservation work, Morgan Duke Conservation Society helps maintain and preserve the natural resources and the environment by entering into Volunteer Stewardship Agreements with the NYSDEC. The NYSDECoffers volunteer programs where organizations can help preserve, maintain, and enhance New York’s natural resources on state land.

Morgan Duke Conservation Society is an all-volunteer, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Financial support we receive from the general public includes online donations, checks, and printer cartridges through our fundraising program.  The public’s generous donations help maintain and preserve the natural resources and the environment in the Adirondack Preserves, Catskill Preserves, and other places throughout the state of New York.
