The Morgan Duke Conservation Society is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that has been protecting the ecosystem, natural resources, and wildlife habitat in the Hudson River Recreation Area in Lake Luzerne, New York, since 2013. This conservation work is done under the supervision of the DEC through a
volunteer stewardship agreement.
James Sullivan Volunteer Steward
James Sullivan, the Volunteer Steward, and dedicated volunteers visit the area during the spring, summer, fall, and winter months. They help ensure the trails, parking lots, and campsites are free of environmental impacts like garbage. The volunteers also assist with painting trail gates, outhouses, and picnic tables. Volunteers also report any trail conditions and concerns.

When visiting the Hudson River Recreation Area known as the Hudson River Special Management Area and Buttermilk, please remember this is a carry-in, carry-out DEC state land. There are no dumpsters or garbage pickup, so whatever you bring in you must carry out and bring home. Also, please stay on the trails and do not walk off-trail or step on ground vegetation. In addition, please do not set up campsites near the Hudson River, as the vegetation near the river protects the waterways by preventing mud from entering the water and turning it brown. We encourage users to follow State Lands regulations when enjoying the area. Please camp in designated campsites.
